What It Takes

Outside, my child, a colder wind blows strong into my face
Whispers spread conspiracies like rain
The judge walks in, the gavel pounds, history falls from grace
The times have changed but the story stays the same

We started building walls again, we slowly lose our mind
We learn to focus on the things that separate us.
We’re going round in circles and leave common sense behind
And ask ourselves: How did it come to this?

Oh it’s hard not to lose courage when the tide begins to turn
It’s hard not to give up as we have so much left to learn
But the night is always darkest right before the daylight breaks
If we talk to each other we got what it takes
If we talk to each other we got what it takes

We may set the world on fire, watch it burn before our eyes
Though some may even clench their fists in fear.
We watch the executioner put on his disguise
And ask ourselves: How did we end up here?

I know it’s hard not to lose faith when you watch as worlds collide
To check the facts and trust your heart and pick the righteous side
But it’s nothing less then all of our futures at the stakes
If we talk to each other we got what it takes

One day, my child, I promise, I will boldly make the claim
That I tried my best to change the world, even if it stayed the same
To make a lasting impact, there can be no guarantee
But to try is better than to wait and see

Be an incandescent beacon, saving souls from getting drowned
Be the inch of road that leads us to a higher ground
Be a voice of reason, learn from past mistakes
If we talk to each other, we got what it takes

But the night is always darkest right before the daylight breaks
If we talk to each other we got what it takes
